When you hear the word “Exercise,” what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For many of us, it’s a bit… heavy. It brings up images of punishing gym sessions, rigid routines and that feeling that if you aren’t breathless or sore the next day, it doesn’t count.

At Bodyfixit, we’ve always believed there’s a better way. Today, we’re following the lead of some of our favourite health experts and making a simple but radical switch in how we approach activity: Choosing “Movement” over “Exercise.”

Why “Exercise” often misses the mark

The fitness industry has spent decades selling us a very narrow version of what it means to be active. We’re told it must be:

  • Punishing: If you aren’t breathless or sore, it didn’t “count.”
  • Mathematical: It’s all about calories burned or “closing the rings” on an app.
  • High-Intensity: Fast, loud, and pushing your limits every single time.

When you are dealing with menopause-related fatigue, stiff joints, or the fear of re-injuring your back, that version of exercise feels like a mountain you aren’t ready to climb. It lowers your confidence and makes you feel like “fitness” isn’t for people like you.

Signs It’s Time to Rethink Exercise

Not sure if you’re pushing too hard, doing too little, or simply using the wrong approach?

Here are some red flags we see often:

  • You feel worse after workouts (fatigue, joint pain, irritability)
  • You’re stuck in cycles of starting and stopping exercise routines
  • Injuries are happening more often
  • Recovering from workouts takes longer
  • You’re constantly chasing results that never show up

These aren’t failures—they’re feedback. Your body is asking for something different.

Movement as Self-Care, Not Self-Punishment

Shifting your mindset here can be powerful. Instead of asking, Did I burn enough calories? ask, Do I feel better after this? Instead of forcing a workout because you “should,” choose movement that leaves you calmer, stronger, or simply more mobile.

Movement can be nourishing. It can be restorative. And when it’s the right size, it builds strength and confidence without dragging you down.

Finding your “Right Size” Movement

This is why at Bodyfixit, we talk about Movement. Movement is broader, kinder and much more accurate. It’s about finding the “Right Size” for your body today.

“Right Size” movement means choosing an activity that supports your health without leaving you depleted or frustrated. It recognises that:

  • It’s not one-size-fits-all: What felt right in your 30s might be too much right now. That isn’t a failure; it’s just a change in season.
  • Sometimes less is more: A 15-minute mobility flow that leaves your back feeling “oiled” and loose is far more valuable than an hour-long gym session that leaves you on the sofa for two days.
  • It’s about your Nervous System: Movement should calm your stress levels and rebuild the trust between your brain and your body.

Rebuilding Confidence through Guided Support

If you’ve lost confidence in your body, the “Just Do It” approach is terrifying. You need to know that you are safe.

  • Guided Support: Having an expert eye means you don’t have to guess. We help you find the movements that feel “just right,” taking the fear out of the process.
  • Small Wins: Motivation doesn’t come from a motivational quote; it comes from evidence. When you realise you can reach for your shoes without a twinge, or stand taller after a session, your confidence naturally grows.
  • Rebuilding Trust:
We help you listen to your body again. You learn to distinguish between “healthy work” in a muscle and the “warning signs” of an injury.

You don’t need to “get fit” to start

One of the biggest myths is that you need a base level of fitness to join a Pilates class. You don’t. You just need the willingness to move. We promise a non-punishing environment where the only goal is to leave feeling better than when you arrived.
