With our brand-new batch of Beginners Pilates Trial Classes just around the corner, we’ve been reflecting on a big question: Why are some people intimidated by Pilates when it’s so amazingly good for your body?
If the thought of stepping into a class makes your tummy turn, you are definitely not alone. It’s completely normal to feel apprehensive before trying something new.
Here are four common reasons people fear Pilates and why you can safely leave those worries at the door with us.

1. “It Looks Intimidating” (The Social Media Trap)
If you type “Pilates” into Google or search for it on Instagram, you are immediately bombarded with images that look, frankly, terrifying.
You see 20-something influencers twisting themselves into impossible, acrobatic shapes, using complicated-looking machines, dressed in £100 matching gym sets. The intimidation is two-fold: What they are doing looks humanly impossible, and who is doing it looks like a glossy fitness magazine.
The Reality: That isn’t real-life Pilates, that is marketing.
Endless images of impossible perfection are boring, predictable and completely unfair to everyday people. Real-life Pilates is for real bodies. It’s done in mismatched socks, comfortably worn T-shirts, and with water bottles bought from the local supermarket. You don’t need a “Pilates body” to do Pilates; you just need a body that wants to move with a little more ease and a lot less ache.

2. “I’m Not Strong, Flexible, or Fit Enough”
This is the classic “I need to get in shape before I go to the gym” trap. People worry that if they can’t touch their toes or hold a plank for three minutes, they will be exposed as “not good enough” the second they walk through the door.
The Reality: Think of us as the “Delia Smith” of movement.
Back in the 1990s, Delia Smith released a famous cookbook teaching people how to boil an egg and make good toast. Some critics scoffed, but millions of people were immensely grateful because she didn’t skip the fundamentals.
We take the exact same approach with Pilates. We don’t assume you already know the lingo, and we don’t expect you to perform circus tricks. We start with the absolute basics: how to breathe properly to support your spine, how to wake up deep core muscles that have been sleeping, and how to move your joints without straining them.
You don’t need to prove your strength when you arrive, you come to class to build it step-by-step.

3. “I’m Afraid of Hurting Myself (or Waking Up an Old Injury)”
This is a very specific, very valid fear. If you have a history of lower back pain, are recovering from a fall, or have received a diagnosis like Osteoporosis, the idea of moving your body can feel genuinely frightening. Pain creates fear, and fear makes us want to protect ourselves by staying still.
Equally, you might have tried a high-impact fitness class in the past that left you flared up and sore for a week, making you twice as shy about trying anything new.
The Reality: Movement isn’t the enemy, unsupported, aggressive movement is.
In a gentle, beginner-focused setting, movement is actually what tells your body to repair tissue, build bone density and lubricate stiff joints. We teach you how to listen to your body’s signals so you stay safely in your “comfortably challenged” zone.
And if you’re feeling nervous? Talk to us! Give us a call before your first session. When a sensitive instructor knows your history, they can tweak exercises specifically for you. Taking an exercise down a notch or working from the back of the room isn’t “failing” – it’s smart, responsible self-care.

4. “I’m Scared of Being Judged”
What if I can’t do the moves? What if I look silly? What if the instructor thinks I’m hopeless? What if everyone else knows what they’re doing except me?
Feeling judged is a huge barrier for adults learning something new.
The Reality: We are far too busy observing your alignment, checking your safety, and planning our next instruction to judge you!
Here is a peek behind the curtain: if someone in our class is struggling with a movement, we don’t look at them and think “they aren’t good enough.” We look at ourselves and think, “How can I explain or adapt this differently so it works for their body?”
If an exercise feels wrong or impossible, don’t be too quick to blame yourself. Almost always, it just means the teacher needs to offer a different variation. A great instructor will never make you feel small for needing a tweak – they will celebrate you for honouring where your body is today.
